Fiber Cement Siding: 3 Common Issues and How to Fix Them
Fiber cement siding is one of the most popular and durable siding materials on the market today. It’s trusted by many homeowners and recommended by industry leaders as well. However, this siding option does experience some common issues that can be problematic in the long run if not addressed properly.
Loose Siding Boards
Loose siding boards can occur due to manufacturing defects or a rushed or poor installation job. This normally happens when a homeowner works with an inexperienced siding installer. This can be a nuisance as the loose board can be heard inside your home as the strong gusts of wind cause the board to flutter creating a vibrating sound. This causes your fiber cement siding board to fail prematurely as it isn’t fastened correctly and could tear off more boards if the wind is extremely strong. This can be remedied by using pin back nailing to secure loose boards that were high-nailed during installation.
Warped Fiber Cement Siding
The main cause of a warped siding is due to the installer not giving the siding the appropriate gap between its ends. This also causes it to come in contact with other parts of your home like the windows, doors or the corners of other siding boards. This can also occur if the siding isn’t properly nailed at the beginning. To solve this problem, your contractor can cut up a portion of the siding long enough to create the perfect gap between the boards and the vertical trims.
Coating Failure
Coating failure can occur due to the paint applied on the product, the priming or the moisture resistance of coating material used. With that being said, the weather also plays an important factor in coating failure. If the product is primed, it should be painted within 180 days of installation or 90 days for unprimed products. We do not recommend staining James Hardie® siding products. If you own a James Hardie ColorPlus® product, we offer touchup services to make your siding look good as new. We’ll use the proper materials and painting techniques that are right for your siding so that they can look at its best.
