Popcorn ceilings, sometimes known as “cottage cheese” or acoustic ceilings, were once very popular, but nowadays they make a home look outdated, which means that you may want to remove it.
Why Should You Have Your Popcorn Ceiling Removed?
A popcorn ceiling automatically dates your home back to its heyday in the 1960s to the 1970s. Popcorn ceilings can be made from a number of different materials, such as styrofoam or recycled paper. Homes built in the 1960s may have popcorn ceilings made of a naturally occurring mineral known as vermiculite, which fell out of favor in the 1980s because of its asbestos content. A ceiling removal contractor will have to make sure whether the ceiling contains asbestos by performing tests.
Popcorn ceilings are characterized by their texture, which resembles popcorn or cottage cheese. The texture is supposed to have noise reduction properties. However, it’s also notoriously difficult to clean. If it happens to contain asbestos, cleaning it with abrasive tools can be dangerous to the house’s occupants.
Popcorn Ceiling Removal Process
Popcorn ceiling removal can generate a lot of dust and debris, which is why interior painting companies take precautions by removing all furniture and covering the walls, floors and fixture with plastic sheeting. Painters will be equipped with dust masks, eye protection and/or respirators to avoid inhaling dust and other particles.
The ceiling will be sprayed with small amounts of water to ease scraping and minimize dust. A specially designed collection system will be used to prevent scraped material from falling onto the floor. Periodically vacuuming the work areas will help reduce the cleanup work.
After scraping, the ceiling will be sanded. Cracks and protruding nail heads will be smoothed and patched. Finally, a layer of primer will be applied, followed by the homeowner’s color of choice. After a strict quality inspection, all plastic sheeting will be removed. Furniture and fixtures will then be put back in place.
